Dental CrownsStroud, OK

When a tooth is too damaged to support a filling or onlay, a dental crown provides the strength and protection it needs to function normally again. At Dental Designs of Stroud, our doctors create custom crowns that restore your tooth’s structure, improve your bite, and blend seamlessly with your natural smile.

With our CEREC technology, we can design and place your crown in a single visit. No temporary crowns, no multiple appointments. You’ll leave our office with a permanent, beautiful restoration the same day.

When Your Tooth Needs Maximum Support

Crowns are recommended when a tooth is too weak or damaged to function safely without full coverage. They act like a protective cap, covering the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line.

Crowns are needed for teeth that have:

  • Large cavities that have destroyed most of the tooth structure
  • Severe fractures or cracks
  • Failed or very large existing fillings
  • Undergone root canal therapy
  • Significant wear from grinding or acid erosion
  • Congenital defects or severe discoloration

Without a crown, these teeth are at high risk of breaking, becoming infected, or needing extraction. A crown protects the remaining tooth structure and allows it to function normally for years and often decades.

Choosing The Right Material

We offer several crown materials, each with specific advantages depending on the location and function of the tooth.

  • Porcelain crowns look incredibly natural and are ideal for front teeth. They’re stain-resistant, biocompatible, and mimic the translucency of real enamel.
  • Zirconia is a metal-free ceramic that’s exceptionally strong and durable. Perfect for back teeth that endure heavy chewing forces while still providing excellent aesthetics.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns combine strength with a natural appearance. The metal substructure provides durability, while the porcelain outer layer looks tooth-like.
  • Gold alloy is the most durable option and is sometimes preferred for back molars where strength matters more than appearance.

Our doctors will recommend the material that best suits the tooth’s location, your bite forces, and your aesthetic preferences.

Restoring Full Function & Strength

The crown doesn’t just protect your tooth. It restores your ability to chew comfortably and confidently. Once crowned, a damaged tooth can withstand normal biting and chewing forces without risk of fracture.

Crowns also restore proper contact between teeth, which improves your bite alignment and prevents food from getting stuck. A well-fitted crown feels just like a natural tooth and functions the same way.

For teeth that have been weakened by large fillings or root canal therapy, a crown provides the structural support needed to keep the tooth functional for the long term.

What To Expect During Treatment

Traditional crown placement typically requires two visits. At the first appointment, we prepare the tooth, take impressions, and place a temporary crown. A dental lab creates your custom crown over the next few weeks. At the second visit, we remove the temporary and permanently bond the final crown.

Same-day crowns with CEREC allow us to complete the entire process in one visit. We prepare the tooth, use a digital scanner to capture a 3D image, design your crown using specialized software, and mill it from a solid block of porcelain or zirconia right here in the office. Within a few hours, your permanent crown is bonded in place.

Both methods deliver excellent results. The advantage of CEREC is convenience: No temporaries, no second visit, and no waiting.

How Long Crowns Last

With proper care, dental crowns can last 15 to 25 years or longer. Longevity depends on the material used, the location of the crown, and how well you maintain it.

To protect your crown:

  • Brush and floss daily, just like you would a natural tooth
  • Avoid chewing ice, hard candy, or other extremely hard objects
  • Wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth
  • Visit us regularly for checkups and cleanings
  • Address any discomfort or changes in your bite right away

We’ll check your crown during routine exams to ensure it’s fitting well and functioning properly. Early detection of small issues prevents larger problems down the road.

Why Crowns Are Essential After Root Canals

Teeth that have undergone root canal therapy need crowns to survive long-term. Root canal treatment removes the nerve and blood supply from inside the tooth, which makes the tooth more brittle and prone to fracture.

A crown protects the weakened tooth structure and prevents it from breaking during normal chewing. Without a crown, a root canal-treated tooth is likely to crack or fracture within a few years, often beyond repair.

Our doctors almost always recommend crowning a tooth after root canal therapy to ensure its long-term survival.

Custom-Made For Comfort & Fit

Every crown we create is custom-designed to fit your tooth precisely and match your bite exactly. We check your bite carefully during placement to ensure the crown doesn’t interfere with your chewing or cause discomfort.

A well-fitted crown should feel like a natural part of your mouth. You shouldn’t notice it when you chew, speak, or close your teeth together. If your crown ever feels high, uncomfortable, or loose, let us know right away so we can make adjustments.
